Wheelchair basketball is a para-sport that was developed initially for people who use a wheelchair for mobility. It is similar in many ways to running basketball, with five players on court for each team, using the same court, hoop, and size 7 basketball as men's basketball. There are rules and adaptations around travelling with the ball and contact.
At a competitive level, players are given 'points' according to their level of ability, ensuring a mix of players is involved at all times. However, we do not have to worry about this and welcome anybody who would like to play.
We use sports wheelchairs, with angled large wheels and three small wheels at the front and back for chair stability. These are very adaptable to suit different body types, with a number of configurations for straps, seats, and footplates as needed. Your chair is personalised to your needs.
British Wheelchair Basketball is the governing body for the sport in the UK, and run semi-professional league as well as coaching and refereeing training sessions throughout the year.
