THE OXFORD BLUES
Teams practice and play most of their home games in Acer Nethercott Sports Hall, a brand new state of the art basketball facility which was built in 2018. Acer Nethercott Sports Hall is just one of two basketball courts housed within the Iffley Road Sports Centre. Here, other facilities in the Centre include the Performance Gym, the Rosenblatt Swimming Pool, and the Sir Roger Bannister Track.
Oxford Basketball are part of the biggest rivalry in university sports, Oxford vs Cambridge. The Varsity Game is the annual inter-university basketball match between Oxford and Cambridge. Since the inaugural game in 1921, Oxford has held the upper hand in the series. The Men's Blues lead their Cambridge counterparts 55-20. Participation in the annual varsity match warrants a player consideration for Full Blues, the highest individual honour granted to a student-athlete at Oxford.
Whereas The Varsity Game is certainly one of the highlights of the competitive calendar, the ultimate goal for the Blues is competing for national titles. Since the team began competing on the national stage in 1947-48, the Blues have won nineteen British university national championships. The Blues have also won three A.B.B.A. National Championships (1955, 1966, and 1968). At that time, the A.B.B.A National Championship was the premier basketball competition for all basketball teams (not just university teams) in England.
